San CristobalCrowned by a 36m statue of Virgin Mary, 869m tall Cerro San Cristobal in Barrio Bellavista towers above Santiago. Reached by funicular railway (the most direct route) or teleferico (aerial tramway) it dominates Parque Metropolitano, central Santiago's largest open space and a major recreational resource for the residants of the capital. From Plaza Caupolican, the funicular rises to Terraza Bellavista which provides extraordinary views of the city. It then continues to climb to the summit of San Cristobal where John Paul II said mass at the Santuario Inmaculada Concepcion during his Santiago visit in 1984. At the Terraza is Estacion Cumbre, the start of the 2000m long teleferico which goes from Cerro San Cristobal, to a station near the north end of Av. Pedro del Valdivia Norte. |
