We connected through LAX and the scales at the airport counter showed that our backpacks weigh ~ 12kgs each. The day packs came in just under 5kgs. The airline expressed some minor concern that we did not have either return tickets or onward bookings. Once we explained our plan to take a ferry to Busan, they let us proceed, but not before making us sign some waiver documents that absolved them of any responsibility in the event there were issues with immigration at Tokyo. I expect we will run into similar questions at other points on this trip.
Arrival in Tokyo was a non-event. We had our first taste of the "over-crowded Tokyo subway" right at the airport terminal train. The immigration procedures were smooth and we were out in minutes. Now the trip is really on !
