After weeks of planning we are finally on our way. The last few days were spent mostly iterating over our checklist, and also packing and unpacking our backpacks a few times to ensure that we had not forgotten anything critical and more importantly that we were not carrying anything that was not absolutely essential. Experience tells us that we will not regret packing light.
We did have some second thoughts about the gear. Do I really want to be wearing these high-ankle boots for a whole year? Since I am carrying so little, could I get away with a smaller, lighter pack? These necessitated a couple of last-minute trips to REI, but I think in the end we have what we think we will be happy with for the months ahead.
We had already bid goodbye to our houseplants a few days earlier and found them a new home. So this morning, after a few quick phone calls, we headed out to the airport.
Tokyo, here we come !
