Approaching the tunnel on Zion-Mt Carmel Highway. Completed in 1930, the road was considered an "almost impossible project" an engineering marvel of its time. It connects lower Zion Canyon with the high plateaus to the east. The hole in the mountain face is a vent for the tunnel.
